Alothough I picked DSotM, meddle and wywh are still right up behind it. I suppose I picked DSotM because I just love the flow of the whole piece, and I just love Breathe, Time, Great Gig, Money and Us and Them (Any Colour You Like honorable mention!).
But then with Meddle, Pillow of Winds and Fearless are just awesome, One of These Days is just great, and Echoes..... wel Echoes is just Echoes!
Then WYWH becuase Shine On is my favourite song (espeically '77 live extended versions, go White GO!) and WYWH and Have a Cigar are also of course favourites!

Ummagumma
Ummagumma was the first Floyd I ever heard. It was just released a few months before and I actually heard some on the new WNEW FM station! I bought the LP and listened to it constantly. I believe it shows both sides of PF for that era. The concert performance is raw and powerful ... the studio session was progressive and ground-breaking. My favorite "piece" (can't really call them songs) is the Narrow Way from the studio and Astronomy Domine from the live. Remembering it was 1970, I was 16 and music was often listened to "under the influence" of mind expanding drugs.... but I never exhaled! What a trip that LP was. (by the way, for you younger fans ... LP stood for "long play" as 33rpm vinyl records were called then.)

My favorite is A Saucerful of Secrets. That album gets better each time I listen to it.

That is a really good album, definitely one of my favorites also. But I think i'd have to say (for me) DSoTm.

Overalll, probably Wish You Were Here, with Obscured by Clouds (not listed in options!) as second favourite.
Does anyone else feel almost compelled to not say Dark Side of the Moon, or is that just some odd, personal quirk?

Agree but for different reasons
Darkman. You ask an interesting question. I'm an old timer ... I'm 52 and got into Floyd in 1969. I still see DSotM as part of their second phase. I personally would recategorize the PF eras as Beginning: Piper through Obscured (and yes Obscured is in my top 3) middle era being: Dark Side through Final Cut and then everything after that their 3rd era. That being said, it's hard to say the Dark Side is not thier best piece, but I go back to the desert island test ... If you could only take 1 PF album ... I would take Ummagumma, if 2, Umma + DSotM and 3 I'd add Obscured by Clouds. I'll never forget Obscured in concert ... dry ice smoke slowly rising from the stage ... the low drone and rumble of the opening notes ... then the slightly off key and mysteriously eastern sounding guitar.... just magic!

I've been thinking about this some more. See if this makes sense or not - for someone who was already a Floyd fan in 1973, Dark Side of the Moon would just be the latest Pink Floyd album and they would be able to form their opinion of it free of any expectations. Now, however (or even 20 years ago when I first heard it), it carries with it the weight of its reputation - it's very difficult to come to it without the preconception of greatness. Therefore, if it fails to impress you as pretty much one of the best albums you ever heard, you'll probably be disappointed.
