Default Roger's Solo Efforts

It's tough out here in the world to be a die-hard Roger Waters fan. Most "regular" people don't know who or what you're talking about when you make a casual Roger reference. I was standing in line at the fish counter at the grocery store and I started muttering about my "favorite hated fresh fish" and how "sole has no eyes", and I didn't get even a glimpse of understanding from any of the crowd that was there.

I hope there are others out there who share my pain. Let's talk Roger for a bit. I'll start with the recent stuff. Call me crazy, but I love Ca Ira. It feels so complete and I am satisfied when it is over that I have heard it all (as opposed to Radio KAOS where you are left wondering what great stuff was edited out).

I have heard that Roger is working on two albums. One is a political world-view type album (think the "Pros and Cons" type "Leaving Beirut" is part of it?) and the other is more of a concept album ("Flickering Flame", "Each Small Candle" included?). You never know what Roger is going to end up doing though. Two albums would be the best-case. The record company might get him to toss out the concepts and just get out an album. Any thoughts?

Roger Waters does tend to fly under the radar of most mortals. I don't think most people (well, Americans anyway) have the attention span or the intelligence to grasp what Rog is up to. Like you, I have quoted passages from Rog's repertoire and have gotten blank stares. I work with some conservatives who cringe when I play "The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range." I wonder what effect "To Kill The Child" would have??

I too enjoyed "Ca Ira", although not an opera fan by any stretch. I teach high school history, and I am a big French Revolution buff, and thought "Ca Ira" really captured the spirit of the revolutionaries and the optimism of a new day dawning (sorry for the cliche). It was also complete--no loose ends.

I enjoy Roger's political material and hope to see that released as his next album. Of course, it's tough to argue with Roger's visions in his conceptual material, so I have no strong preference as to what his next album is--so long as he does one!!! 20 years ago, Roger was still enough of a force to tell his record company to "sod off" if they didn't want to release his material. I don't think he's a strong enough draw to pull that off now. Unfortunately, Roger has become a victim of the "market forces" he has so frequently decried.

Im a conservative and my fav Roger album is Amused To Death [and The Final Cut, but we can save that argument for another day]. Tho I may not agree with many of his political views, I love the way he weaves thought provoking lyrics into a song that flows like a stream. Its easy to get lost in his music. He is quite a musical genius.

I also love Ca Ira. Ive got a live version of it when he played in November and Ive listened to a few times and have always admired classical music and he did a great job with this show.

As far as his other releases, Radio KAOS is a great album as well. Pros and Cons isnt one of my favs, but its a decent recording as well. Ive never gotten around to his other releases so I cant comment.

Is there anywhere on the web to download the live Ca Ira show you mentioned? I've also searched far and wide for a copy of the original Ca Ira demo Roger made to submit to the French government. He does all the vocals himself in French!! They showed him recording it on the Ca Ira DVD. It's probably more that there's something out there I don't have than a real need to hear it though. Ah well, the struggles of a Floyd completist...

I'm one of the few who has spent many an hour listening to Pros and Cons. It's addictive in a similar way to The Final Cut (the original, not the new Tiger's Broke Free edit). I can leave either of those CDs in repeating and not tire of them. Pros and Cons gets a bad wrap in my opinion. Roger has more "soul" than he's given credit.

It's from Radio KAOS where "The Fish Report With A Beat" should go.

Anyway, just d/l'd the Radio City 4-4-06 show Torrent. Awesome. Crosby and Nash are great! Louder sound level than the Frankfurt show too (can be clearly heard without turning your knobs to 11!). Dominoes instead of Wot's Uh The Deal.

So with the new pressure on the site, probably not much of a chance you'll be able to post the live Ca Ira. Could you start a Torrent?

I haven't searched in a while. Any news on Roger's summer tour? I must see him again. Missed Dave this time around. Hope there's a next time. ROIO will have to hold me over.

And on with the topic... Roger. I also do not necessarily agree with him politically. He's way out to the left for me. But, I can appreciate his passion and conviction. And of course his sometimes stunning use of words. The most powerful examples of Roger's lyric writing power must be The Final Cut, Pros and Cons, and Amused to Death. They are lyrically unstoppable! Cynical and biting, but beautiful and addictive. I've listened to these albums hundreds of times and continue to find new things (probably due to my own aging and maturing).

By the way, I've recently downloaded a couple of new (to me) Roger things.

"The Pros and Cons of Early Bootlegs": a grainy, fuzzy handheld video of Roger and Eric doing a complete Hitchhiking show. Sound quality A-/B+ Video quality C-/D but watchable if only out of curiosity.

"Flickering Fireworks: The Angy Years": an assorted collection of bizarre and pissed off stage rantings by Roger. I havent listened to all of this one yet, I'll post a review in the next couple of days.
