True. In fact when interviewed about Animals, he said he was not putting in as much as he had been before because of problems with his marriage. He says it is the beginning of his writer's bloc.

Default Pink Floyd Sound comes from unity

Quote:
With out rick, it would not sound like floyd. Floyd is equal in all parts.
This is true with no doubts.

You just have to listen to the interviews in the "making of Dark Side of the Moon" or at the end of the VHS of "Pink Floyd in Pompei" and you'll here David and Rick explaining how they came out with the final sound of the guitar in Dark Side.
Not only, in the "making.." DVD Rick explains hoe he composed "the GIG" from a jazz piece he was working on.
Finally, in Nick's book and in many other interviews, you get more or less the same division of work between the 4 floyds:

Roger was the main composing mind, and listening to many of the outtakes and demos it comes out clearly, even if the main hits come from a group creation.

David is the voice and the guitar, I can't think of Floyd without that guitar, and has provided some of the best floyd tracks ever, ie Comfortably Numb was written for David's first solo album and didn't make 'cause it wasn't finished in time for press release.

Rick is the main responsable for the floydian melodic lines and the final sound, acording not only to David but also to Alan Parson in many interviews.

Nick use to take care of the show and, on my personal opinion, has always been the glue of the band.

In conlusion:
PINK FLOYD is a team, just listen to all the solo projects to get the differences

its like saying Syd was innecesary. (totally false!)

as ReneRaam says:
PINK FLOYD is a team, just listen to all the solo projects to get the differences:

- Gilmour: He continued with something that, is in fact, The Division Bell. (you can't say that it was an PF Album, it was perfectionated by Pink Floyd)

- Waters: To me, his lyrics sound like the mind of a social resentful, product of the war.
(Even if sounds cruel or too cold, is the pure true)

But after that "classification", i have to say that every point of view was vital when PF was together.
Example: The Wall

Conclusion:
Every one in the band played a unique role, that made PF what it was
