Wright on DSotM
Pre Dark Side, Rick Wright was very prominent in the overall Pink Floyd sound. Since DSotM was really the piece that put the Floyd on the map, I think his influence on this album must be considered. In the songs "Breathe", "Time" and "Us and Them", Rick's input is important. His Miles Davis-like chord changes gave several songs that extra quality that however subtle, still may have opened the album to a wider audience. Of course there is "Great Gig in the Sky" which is Rick's masterpiece. I know many people who bought it just for this piece alone. It was so unique at the time, so sexual, so beautiful and intense that for many of the buying public in the '70's, this was the piece that gave DSotM credibility, interest and class. No other progressive rock group had the balls to put something so dramatic on an LP. Because of these facts, I believe Rick's influence on Dark Side's massive success is almost equal to that of Roger's ans Daves.
