Default My inspiration

My life changing Pink Floyd experience centers around David Gilmour. I had no idea who he was, I only knew that the first time I heard Pink Floyd, I was a young teenager at a party. Someone put on an album (yes the wonderful, old vinyl variety!) and I was blown away! The guitar sang to me!

I have always been a fan of Rock and Roll electric guitar stylings, but I had never before heard someone who could play like David Gilmour. The noise of the party faded quickly into the background and I was enrapt. The notes flowed around me in 3D (The stereo in question was quite a good one).

The next day, I pressed my parents for a guitar. I had to know what it felt like to communicate my feelings and inner world through a guitar. Of course, I will never have the talent of David Gilmour and it has been a long, arduous journey, but I finally know what it feels like to speak through an instrument. I am transported when I sit down with my guitar and play.

I truly feel I have David Gilmour to thank for my love of guitars and the fact that I can play today. He has inspired me and entertained me more than he will ever know. Many an argument can be made and has been made over who is the greatest guitar player of all time, and everyone has an opinion. However, no one will ever be able to convince me that David Gilmour isn't the greatest to me.

Yeah brother, he's the top of the heap alright. The man plays with more soul than anyone else has ever dreamed of.

He's definitely a great guitarist, I just can't stand his solo stuff though. I think "About Face" is one of the worst albums ever recorded.

Your the only one who has ever said that. I personally love about face, but I like On An Island better because it is more musically thought out.

Thumbs up

Indeed

Dave can put more feeling in three notes than Eddie Van Halen can put in a five minute wankfest.
Just listen to his first heart-stopping solo on "Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Part I)."
That solo still makes the hairs stand up on my arms.

Hey to each their own, I by no means think my opinions on music are any more valid than anyone elses.

However, I'm not the only one that thinks that because my brother hates that album too. I just can't get into it...it seems too "Adult Contemporary" for me.

It is too '80s, you don't hear the real David Gilmour.

Well, it seems to me you have to look at what was happening when that album was made, as the events in his life most certainly influenced the music. His feud with Roger was pretty much at it's peak, and he was starting down what must have appeared to him to be a very different path from what had come before. Even the name, 'About Face', reflects that very strongly. He was trying to do something different from what Floyd had become by 'The Final Cut'. However, a huge part of Floyd was what he contributed with his soulful guitar, and in trying to get away from the Floyd influence I believe he may have lost his way a bit for a time, hence the different style of compositions on 'About Face. His career was in turmoil, and he seemed unsure of exactly which way he should go and I believe the music reflects that. I do like that album, although it is most definitely very unlike Floyd in many respects, and I think that was by design. Didn't take him long to get it figured out though and get himself headed back in the right direction.
