It was not that he was forcing them, I believe, it was rather his trouble with communicating musically - they others simply followed because it was for the best.

Syd Barrett was very important to the group. He gave it the name Pink Floyd, after "Tea Set" was being used by someone else. He composed most of their really good early stuff, without which, the band would probably never have gotten a contract to start recording an album in the studio. Some of his songs have had a long lasting legacy, like Interstellar Overdrive, and Astronomy Domine. And he was the subject of many songs, such as Wish you were here, and Shine on you crazy diamond, and some elements of the wall.

I sincerely believe that if Syd had stayed in the band, that Pink Floyd would've been much better (provided he stayed sane). HOWEVER, If he had stayed, and because of this, David Gilmour never came, then the band would be much worse. I think it was best as the 5 man Floyd.

Plus, Syd Barrett is one of those rock "Legends" that has all those strange and interesting stories behind him, and that makes it that much more interesting.

So even if you don't really appreciate his music, do take to heart that he is one of Pink Floyd's founder, and was indeed, VERY important for the band.

Could not have said it better oldpink. Syd was the catalyst for the band in more ways than one. Would not be the Pink Floyd we all know and love without his tremendous influence before and after his departure.
